Start with what makes them smile

Look inside, not just at the age label
Check sample pages where available. Large shapes and bold outlines can make a page feel approachable. More detailed scenes may suit a child who enjoys spending longer on a picture. Age ranges are a guide, not a test of ability.
Think about the tools
Crayons, pencils and washable markers behave differently. Check the book description for paper and printing details, and place a spare sheet behind a page when using markers. Test a small area first because ink may show through.
